Raleigh – Nathaniel Franklin Johnson, 87, passed away on December 21, 2016. He was born in Halifax, NC, the son of the late Lucy Denton Johnson and Peter Franklin Johnson. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Lucille Johnson, and four siblings Marvin Payne Johnson, Charles Linwood Johnson, Rosa Johnson Lynch and Robert Alton Johnson.

Johnson, a Green Beret, served 20 years with distinction in the US Army, earning the Army Good Conduct Medal (3), the National Defense Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. He entered the Army in 1948. After completing initial entry training and Basic Airborne Course, Frank served much of his career in Medical Detachment of the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft Bragg, in the 326th Airborne Medical Company of the 101st Airborne Division and USAGAR at Ft Campbell, KY. He also served overseas assignments in South Korea and in 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Company C, in Bad Tölz, Germany. His last assignment before retiring in 1968 was as a Special Forces communications sergeant in Company C, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Battalion, at Fort Bragg.

Frank moved to Raleigh with his beloved wife and son in 1968 where he opened his own business as a Certified Lab Technician. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at Lake Gaston and maintaining the yard and, in his later years, Frank looked forward to grabbing a cup of coffee with his friends each morning. Frank is survived by his son, Johnny Daren Johnson of Raleigh; granddaughter Amber Wellington, husband Randy and great-granddaughter Isla of Washington, DC; grandson Brad Johnson, also of Raleigh; many nieces and nephews and friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Rev. Randy Martin will officiate a graveside service with full military honors in Cedarwood Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on December 29. The family will receive family and friends at a viewing at Wrenn, Clarke, and Hagan Funeral Home at 12:00 p.m. prior to the graveside service.
