Robert Aubart MacKenzie, age eighty-nine passed away on Thursday, September 1st, 2022. “Bob” went to Roanoke Rapids’ City Schools until the tenth grade. Then, he attended St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo, NY. While at St. Mary’s Bob was introduced to basketball. After graduation, he continued to play basketball for a semi-pro-team. He relocated to the Roanoke Rapids-Weldon area and worked in the family restaurant businesses (Mack’s Truck Stop, The Colonial Manor Restaurant, and the Rebel Restaurant). In May of 1954, Bob married the love of his life, Edith Lynch MacKenzie. They were married for sixty- seven years. In 1968, Bob went back to school at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. He earned a BS degree in Business. Next, Bob embarked on a new career by becoming a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf in Charlotte, NC.
Bob had several interesting hobbies. He built wooden hydroplane racing boats, enjoyed electric trains, horseback riding, and radio-controlled model planes. Furthermore, Bob took immense pride and joy in teaching anyone he ever met deaf sign language.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith L. MacKenzie, an infant daughter, Betty Jean MacKenzie, his sister, Jean McCoy, his brother, Donald “Jack” MacKenzie, and his parents, Donald and Claire MacKenzie Barrett.
Bob is survived by his four daughters Patty Little (Lynn), Terry Sides (Jim), Jan Cline (Michael) and Jane Stewart (Mike). His five grandchildren: Laurie Livengood (Jeremy), Gale Sides, Lauren Cline, Marie, and Robert Stewart. And our second set of twins in the family; great grandchildren Masyn and Bradyn Livengood. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Our dad will always be loved and remembered by his family.
Wrenn Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. There will be a Catholic Mass held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 7th at 2:00 pm. Presiding over the service will be Father Pius Wekesa and Father Marlon Mendieta. Interment will be held at Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends after the cemetery service.
